June 15, 2025 - Why Did I Create a Website?

Hello, Internet! Is there anybody out there? Is the internet dead? Lately it feels like I'm just bouncing between the same handful of websites: X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, YouTube, Instagram... really, it's just half a dozen or so, and that's basically it. Honestly? I'm tired of them all.

Where are all the fun, amazing websites I used to stumble upon in my youth, during the early days of home internet? Some are still around; many are gone forever. But more than that, why doesn’t anyone make sites like that anymore?

Back in the ’90s and early 2000s, having a personal or fan/interest website was just something most internet enthusiasts did. Social media? That always felt more for the “normies”, the folks who stayed away from the web until those pulling strings decided smartphones were practically mandatory. Not for calls, but for keeping tabs... but I digress.

It's more than just some nostalgia though, right? I'm a creative person, I make music, I write, I enjoy talking about things that matter with other people. Using Social Media combined with Big Tech platforms, there isn't much creativity happening anymore, aside from YouTube, I suppose at least as long as you don't say the wrong things in your videos.

So it's not just about creativity either, is it? I don't like censorship. I value privacy, mine and yours. I don't like how everything is curated for me, and I definitely don't like being used as a product for advertisement. It feels like the worst parts of capitalism are strangling the internet and reducing us all to nothing but consumers.

But it doesn't have to be this way. The internet wasn't always like this and while it might seem like a lost cause I still feel like I have to try. I want to be true to my values and one way I can do that is by creating my own space. A place that isn't run by algorithms, ads, or engagement metrics. Not everything on the internet needs to be optimized or monetized. A website can be a space you create just for yourself. A place that lets your creative side shine and where you can share what matters to you.
